 HottBoxx Charity Gigs

In 2004 HottBoxx's Carla came up with the idea of holding an annual summer charity gig outdoors at a local Real Ale pub. So far we have had four such events, the first three of which were held at the Exeter Arms, Exeter Place, Derby. Admission at all events has been free and money has been raised through raffles, cake sales, collecting tins and donations.  All proceeds have been donated to the charities.  These events would not have been possible without the generous help and financial support provided by pub staff and friends and fans of HottBoxx.

2004 - Friends of the Nightingale Macmillan Unit

Our first gig, held on Sunday 18 July 2004 was in support of the Derby based Friends of the Nightingale Macmillan Unit.  This is a specialist cancer palliative care unit of the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary. It also acts as a resource centre providing information and research material as well as education and training for nursing staff.

2005 - National Association for Colitis and Crohn's Disease

Our second chosen charity gig was held on Sunday 10 July for the National Association for Colitis and Crohn's Disease (NACC). The NACC brings together people of all ages who have Crohn's Disease or Ulcerative Colitis, their families and the health professionals involved in their care. These two illnesses are both forms of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and they affect about 1 in 400 people in the United Kingdom.  At this event Blue Julep (Chris Hall, Hazel Scott and Carla Simmons) played a guest spot.

2006 – Cystic Fibrosis Trust

HottBoxx’s third Annual Charity event was held on Sunday 23 July 2006  in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust.  This gig had particular significance as HottBoxx members Jim and Sue have two grandsons who were both born with cystic fibrosis. This is the UK’s most common life-threatening inherited disease and affects over 7,500 people in the UK, and is caused by a faulty gene.  The average life expectancy of a CF sufferer is around 31 years. The Cystic Fibrosis Trust is the UK’s only national charity dedicated to all aspects of CF.  It funds research to treat and cure CF, aims to ensure that those with CF receive appropriate care, and provides information, advice and support to people with CF and their families.

2008 – Treetops Hospice Ripple Appeal

On Sunday 6 July 2008 we moved our charity gig to The Royal Oak, Ockbrook, Derbyshire, to support their efforts to raise money for this local Hospice.  Treetops Hospice helps patients with life-limiting conditions by providing respite care at its day centre, giving their families and carers a break.  Space is very limited in their current premises and they launched The Ripple Appeal to raise £2m to build a new centre which would double capacity to 100 patients and provide space for more therapy and training sessions.
